AllianzGI Takes Majority Stake in Germany’s 2.6 GW Battery Storage Platform

Allianz Global Investors is making a major move into Germany’s expanding battery-storage market, acquiring a 51% stake in Green Energy Storage Initiative (GESI) on behalf of Allianz insurance companies.

GESI is developing three large-scale battery projects across Bavaria and Lower Saxony with a combined grid connection capacity of approximately 2.6 GW. The projects are positioned at important points on Germany’s transmission network and are expected to begin coming online by 2029.

For AllianzGI, the transaction is more than an investment in renewable-energy infrastructure. It represents a bet on battery storage becoming an essential part of the electricity business as Germany expands its reliance on wind and solar power.

Large batteries can store electricity when generation exceeds immediate demand and release it when the grid needs additional supply. They can also help reduce congestion and make it easier for grid operators to manage fluctuations from renewable generation.

The investment also marks Allianz’s second direct battery-storage investment in Germany in a short period. In March, AllianzGI announced a partnership with TotalEnergies involving an approximately 800 MW portfolio of battery projects.

GESI has additional projects in its pipeline, meaning the latest transaction could become the starting point for a much larger partnership.

The deal highlights a broader shift in the energy business: batteries are moving from supporting technology to strategic infrastructure—and major investors increasingly want a stake in that transition.
